Purpose of these physicals
Most schools require students to have a physical to participate in sports or extracurricular activities. Both of these physicals can be performed at iCare ER & Urgent Care. We offer fast and cost-effective physicals by our medical professional team. They are conducted in private exam rooms with the parents of the minors present at all times. Our certified on-site laboratory makes sure that your test results are returned quickly, often in as few as 15 minutes.
These annual physicals help catch health concerns before they become serious. Medical problems, such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, all can be addressed by one of our iCare ER physicians. It’s important to complete a physical six weeks before you begin any sport or activity.
What to bring to your physical
Students who need a school or sports physical should bring all required forms to their appointment. Many schools require vision tests, so it’s important to bring contacts and glasses to a physical. Additionally, details about the medical history of each student’s family may be discussed. It is helpful to compile a list of this information prior to the physical and bring it to the exam.
What does a physical consist of?
Every school has different requirements for physicals. However, there are some basic tests that make sure a student’s health is intact. These tests are done to detect any existing medical problems. Medical history is discussed, where we learn about the student’s medical family history too. We discuss lifestyle issues, such as smoking or diet, as well as vaccination history.
Depending on your school’s requirements, physicals may consist of checking vitals, including pulse, blood pressure, or temperature, as well as height and weight. The physician also checks for any abnormalities on the body, including the abdomen, neck, limbs, and head. We also may measure reflexes, muscle strength, lung function, posture, and joint health to determine eligibility to participate in sports. Some schools may also require blood work, vaccine updates, and an eye exam, depending on the student’s age.
